When it comes to any geographic region defined by human geography, there are going to be some discrepancies from time to time about just how the boundaries of that region are defined. The Golden Horseshoe region is a good example. The region is more about the industrial clout and large population of a certain area in Ontario rather than a specific plot of land with definitive boundaries. For that reason, the areas included in the Golden Horseshoe region have changed several times since the phrase was coined back in the 1960s. Today, most term the area "Greater Golden Horseshoe", which indicates the fact that the region has expanded significantly over the past four decades. It now includes Kitchener Waterloo real estate listings as well as those in Barrie and St. Catharines.

The earliest definition of the Golden Horseshoe were fairly obvious; one was talking about the region that curved around the western shore of Lake Ontario, making Oakville real estate a prime example. Thus, whether one was looking for Toronto lofts or searching for information on companies in Oshawa, you could be sure that you would be searching within the Golden Horseshoe area. However, many of the outlying communities have expanded significantly since the industrial boom of the millennium began, and the region has expanded accordingly.

The main extensions to the Golden Horseshoe have been the inclusion of communities in the north. Most significant among these are the towns of Markham and Barrie. In fact, Barrie, is one of the most recent and the northernmost of the cities now included in the Greater Golden Horseshoe area. The opportunities in these communities tend to be quite different from those to the south, whether one is comparing Durham or Mississauga real estate or the economies of Lynden or Bethany. Still, the area has been included into the wealthiest region of Canada for a reason. Namely, the communities and the transportation routes that run throughout the new northern parts of the GGH are vital to the functions of the southern part. Moreover, the increasing size of the communities to the south means more people are showing greater interest in locating homes and businesses in the north.

The entire northern part of the Greater Golden Horseshoe may not be as economically diverse as the southern, but it more than makes up for this in terms of landscape diversity. The north area stretches as far up as the point of Georgian Bay, thus including some of what is considered to be prime Ontario cottage country. You won't find a lot of lofts for sale; Toronto and area have cornered the market there. What you will find, though, are one or two industry towns within a comfortable rural backdrop. It's this setting that makes the area so attractive to tourists and residents alike.

In this section of the site, we will be talking about the communities and landscape that make up the northern part of the Greater Golden Horseshoe region in Ontario. Although they are not as linked, in terms of overlap, as the cities to the south, the north part of the horseshoe is essential to the well being of the whole.
